Internal Threats to Data Security

Internal threats come from within an organisation — from employees, contractors, or anyone with legitimate access to systems. Unlike external attacks, which must find a way to break through defences, internal threats already exist behind them.

This makes them particularly dangerous, as the usual barriers such as firewalls and access controls offer little protection when the threat is already inside.

Unintentional Disclosure of Data

This happens when an employee accidentally exposes sensitive information — not out of malice, but through carelessness. For example, a member of staff might CC the wrong person in an email containing confidential client details, or leave a screen visible in a public area.

This type of threat is especially common in busy workplaces where employees are rushing and not thinking carefully about how they handle sensitive data. The key point is that the employee had no harmful intention — but the consequences for the organisation can be just as serious as a deliberate attack.
