Conveying Meaning, Creating Impact & Engaging Audiences

25 min

Introduction

Knowing the three types of media code is only part of the picture. You need to understand the specific tools and techniques that producers use to put those codes into practice.

For every technique you learn, practise completing this sentence: "[Technique] is used so that [effect on audience]." That two-part structure — technique plus effect — is what earns marks.

Animations

Animation uses moving images that have been created rather than filmed. In media products, animation can range from a fully animated short film to a simple animated button on a website. Animations engage audiences by bringing static ideas to life and can simplify complex information — an animated diagram explaining how a machine works is far easier to follow than a written description. Animation also allows producers to create worlds, characters, and events that would be impossible or impractical to film, making it a powerful tool for imagination and storytelling.
