Health & Safety
Overview
Health and safety is a legal and professional responsibility that applies throughout every phase of media production — from planning and location scouting through to the shoot itself and post-production. Media producers have a duty to protect everyone involved in or affected by their work, including crew, actors, and members of the public. You do not need to know specific Acts of legislation for this topic, but you must understand common risks, how to mitigate them, and the purpose of the key documents used.
Health and Safety Risks and Hazards in Media Production
A hazard is anything that has the potential to cause harm. Media production environments — particularly on location — involve a wide variety of hazards that would not typically exist in an office setting.
Physical hazards are the most immediately obvious. On a street shoot, these might include traffic, uneven pavements, kerbs, and overhead cables. On a studio set, trailing power cables for lighting rigs and cameras create significant tripping risks. Heavy equipment — camera dollies, lighting stands, sound booms — poses a manual handling risk if lifted or moved incorrectly.
Electrical hazards are a constant concern wherever powered equipment is in use. Damaged cables, overloaded extension leads, and equipment used near water all carry a risk of electric shock or fire.
Environmental hazards vary by location. Outdoor shoots bring exposure to weather conditions — bright sun, rain, and cold all affect both safety and equipment. Uneven ground, confined spaces, and locations near water introduce further risks that would not apply indoors.
Working at height is a hazard when lighting rigs, cranes, or elevated camera positions are involved. Falls from height are among the most serious risks in any production environment.
Fatigue is a less visible but genuine hazard in an industry known for long working hours. Tired crew members are more likely to make mistakes, and fatigue can affect concentration, reaction time, and judgement.
