Features and Uses of Cloud Storage
What is Cloud Storage?
Cloud storage means saving your files on remote servers hosted on the internet, rather than on your own device. Instead of a document living solely on your laptop, it lives on a powerful computer in a data centre, somewhere like a Google or Microsoft facility, and you access it via the internet. Services like Google Drive, OneDrive, and Dropbox are everyday examples.
There are four key features to cloud storage you should know:
- Setting and sharing access rights
- Synchronisation of cloud & individual devices
- 24/7 Availability
- Scalability
Setting & Sharing Access Rights
Access rights control who can see or edit a file. Rights are typically set as: no access, view only, comment, or full edit — meaning different people can be given different levels of access to the same file depending on their role. For example, a manager might share a budget spreadsheet so colleagues can only view it, not change it. Organisations can also create shared drives or folders for entire teams, where consistent permissions apply to everyone in that group automatically.
