Features and Uses of Cloud Computing
What is Cloud Computing?
Cloud computing means using software, storage, and processing power that runs on remote servers accessed via the internet — rather than on your own device or a local server. Instead of installing a program on your laptop, you open a browser and use it there. Google Docs is a perfect everyday example.
There are four key features to cloud computing you should know:
- Online applications
- Consistency of version between users
- Single shared instance of a file
- Collaboration tools/features
Online Applications
These are programs you access through a web browser rather than installing locally. Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace let staff open a spreadsheet from any device without needing to install anything first. This matters for organisations because it reduces setup time and works across different devices — meaning a member of staff could switch from their office desktop to a personal laptop at home and pick up exactly where they left off.
