Selection of Platforms and Services

What is a Cloud Service Provider?

A cloud service provider (CSP) is a company that owns and maintains powerful computers, called servers, stored in large buildings known as data centres. Instead of buying and managing their own equipment, organisations pay to use the CSP's infrastructure over the internet.

Because different providers offer different features, pricing models, and interfaces, choosing the right one matters — so what should organisations actually consider when selecting a cloud platform or service?

Number & Complexity of Features

A cloud platform might offer a vast range of tools — file storage, video calling, real-time document editing, version history, and more. However, more features isn't always better.

  • A small business might find a feature-heavy platform like Microsoft 365 overwhelming and expensive when a simpler tool like Google Drive covers everything they actually need.
  • A large organisation with complex workflows might need advanced features such as admin controls, audit logs, automated backups, or version history.

The key question is: does the platform do what the organisation needs, without unnecessary complexity getting in the way?
