The Impacts of Modern Technologies on Individuals

Modern technologies have transformed not just how organisations operate, but how individual employees experience work day to day. The three aspects below explore both the opportunities and the challenges that arise for individuals — covering flexibility, working styles, and mental wellbeing.

Flexibility (home/remote working)

Flexibility refers to an individual's ability to choose where they carry out their work — most commonly, working from home rather than commuting to a central office. Digital tools such as cloud platforms, video conferencing (e.g., Microsoft Teams), and VPNs make this possible.

Positive: Remote working removes the daily commute, giving employees time back in their day. It also allows people who live far from major cities, or who have caring responsibilities, to access jobs that would otherwise be out of reach. For an employee with young children, being at home when the school run happens can make an enormous practical difference.

Negative: Not every job can be done remotely — and not every home is a suitable workspace. Employees who live in small flats or share accommodation with others may struggle to find a quiet, dedicated area to work. There is also a risk that the boundary between work and personal life dissolves entirely, with employees feeling pressure to be permanently available simply because they are always technically 'at work'.
