The Impacts of Modern Technologies on Organisations

Modern technologies offer organisations powerful new ways to work, communicate and grow — but they also introduce fresh challenges. For every advantage a new tool or system brings, there is a potential cost or risk to consider. The seven aspects below explore both sides of that balance.

Required Infrastructure

Infrastructure is everything an organisation needs to run its digital systems — devices (laptops, phones), communication technologies (broadband, Wi-Fi), and platforms (local software or cloud-based services like Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace).

Positive: Modern technologies allow organisations to choose flexible infrastructure — for example, using cloud platforms instead of buying expensive servers. Staff can work using devices they already own (known as BYOD — Bring Your Own Device).

Negative: Setting up and maintaining the right infrastructure is costly and complex. An organisation that adopts remote working tools still needs reliable internet connections, compatible devices, and staff who know how to use the platforms. If any part of the infrastructure fails, the whole system can break down.
