Net Neutrality and How It Impacts on Organisations

20 min

Net Neutrality

Net neutrality is the principle that internet service providers (ISPs), companies like BT or Virgin Media, must treat all internet traffic equally. This means they cannot throttle (slow down), block, or unfairly prioritise access to specific websites or online services.

Think of it like a water company: they deliver water to every home at the same pressure through the same pipes, regardless of what you're using it for. Net neutrality applies that same idea to data.

How it impacts organisations

If net neutrality is in place:

  • A small start-up's website loads just as fast as a large corporation's — levelling the playing field
  • Organisations can use any cloud service, communication tool or platform without ISPs interfering
  • Businesses can rely on consistent performance when using video conferencing, cloud storage, or online applications

If net neutrality is removed or weakened:

  • ISPs could charge organisations extra fees to have their content delivered at full speed — favouring those who can pay more
  • Competitors could pay an ISP to have a rival's service deliberately slowed down — a form of digital sabotage
  • Smaller organisations may struggle to compete if larger rivals can afford "fast lane" deals
  • Organisations relying on real-time tools (such as video calls or cloud computing) could suffer performance issues if their provider isn't in a favoured arrangement
