Creative Job Roles

What are Creative Job Roles?

Every media product — from a game trailer to a social media campaign — is brought to life by people working in distinct roles. Creative job roles are those focused on generating ideas and producing original content. They sit alongside technical and senior roles to form the full production team.

It is worth knowing that on small-scale productions, a single person might cover several of these roles at once. A freelance content creator, for example, might also photograph their own images and write their own copy. On larger productions, each role is a separate specialism.

The Production Phases

Before looking at individual roles, it helps to understand the three phases of production that job roles map onto.

Pre-production is the planning stage — everything that happens before any content is actually made. Production is the creation stage, where content is actively developed. Post-production is the finishing stage, involving refinement, editing, and final delivery. Some creative roles sit firmly in one phase; others span all three.
