Technical Job Roles
What are Technical Job Roles?
Where creative roles focus on ideas and original content, technical job roles are concerned with the tools, technology, and processes used to build and deliver media products. Technical professionals turn creative concepts into working, finished outputs — whether that is a filmed sequence, a playable game, or a fully coded website.
As with creative roles, the size of a production matters. On a small project, a single person might operate the camera, record the audio, and edit the final video themselves. On a large production, each of these is a separate, specialist role.
Camera Operator
A camera operator is responsible for capturing moving image footage using professional camera equipment. They work across film, television, advertising, and online video production.
Responsibilities include setting up and operating the camera, selecting and executing appropriate shots and angles, working with the director to ensure footage meets the creative vision, and maintaining the equipment. Camera operating is firmly a production phase role — footage can only be captured once pre-production planning is complete.
