Flow Charts
What is a Flow Chart?
A flow chart is a diagram that maps out a sequence of steps or a decision-making process using standardised shapes connected by arrows. In media production, flow charts are used to plan how a user will move through an interactive product — such as a website, a digital game, or an app — showing every possible path they might take and every decision point they might encounter.
Unlike some planning documents that describe what something will look like, a flow chart focuses on how something will work.
Who Uses a Flow Chart?
Flow charts are used by members of the production team who are responsible for the structure and functionality of an interactive product. A web designer or web developer might use one to plan the navigation of a website, mapping out which pages link to which. A games designer or interactive media developer would use a flow chart to plan the logic of a game, including branching storylines or menu systems.
The document is also useful for a client, who can follow the flow chart to understand how their product will function before any content is produced.
