Asset Logs
What is an Asset Log?
An asset log is a tracking document used during the pre-production and production phases of a media project. Its purpose is to record every piece of content — such as images, audio clips, fonts, or video footage — that will be used in the final product. Rather than leaving asset management to chance, the asset log gives the whole team a clear, shared record of what they have, where it came from, and whether they are legally allowed to use it.
Think of it as the project's filing system on paper: without it, a large production could quickly lose track of dozens of files, permissions and deadlines.
Who Uses an Asset Log?
The asset log is used primarily by the producer or project manager, who is responsible for overseeing the production as a whole.
However, it is also used by other members of the production team — for example, a graphic designer might consult it to check which images are cleared for use, or a video editor might refer to it to locate source files. In short, anyone who needs to know the status of a production asset can make use of it.
