Mood Boards
What is a Mood Board?
A mood board is a visual collection of reference material that communicates the intended look, feel, and style of a media product. Where a mind map is about generating and connecting ideas, a mood board is about capturing an aesthetic direction — showing rather than telling. A content creator working on a wildlife charity campaign, for example, might assemble photographs of landscapes, colour palettes, and font samples to establish the visual tone before a single frame is filmed or a single graphic is designed.
Purpose
The purpose of a mood board is to establish and communicate the visual style of a project during pre-production. It gives everyone involved a shared sense of what the finished product should look and feel like, reducing the chance of misunderstanding later. It can also be shared with a client to agree on a creative direction before production begins.
