Purpose of Media Products

15 min

What is Purpose?

Every media product is created for a reason. That reason is its purpose — the job it is designed to do. Before a designer makes a single decision about colour, layout or language, the purpose of a product must be clear, because everything else flows from it.

This unit identifies five purposes you need to know: advertise/promote, educate, entertain, inform, and influence.

Advertise / Promote

A product designed to advertise or promote something wants its audience to take action — typically to buy a product, use a service, or engage with a brand. Think of a poster for a new film or a social media ad for a clothing brand. The goal is to create desire or interest and drive the audience towards a specific response.
